Despite the atrocious weather the fairy tern chicks are doing well.
The 2 Waipu chicks were banded on Saturday 28 January on a surprisingly fine day. A haze fence of fine soft material was used to surround the area so they did not bolt away at the completion of banding, and the parents could be nearby to feed them. They will soon be trying out their wings and practising flying skills.
Some of the aviary chicks on the sand dunes are now hover diving over a small pool and successfully catching their own fish which is excellent news. The DOC Rangers are being helped by volunteers catching tiny fish with a NZ Fairy Tern Charitable Trust seine type net used in an ongoing fish study.
It will be interesting following their progress.
