Papakanui on the west coast
Bertram, the eldest male fairy tern is the proud father of the only chick so far who is banded and will be near fledging
The youngish female is still being fed by 2 males and enjoying all the attention.
DOC has removed eggs to the zoo to hatch and the chicks will be raised in a purpose built aviary as this is a way of increasing the number of these rare birds. Already the resident birds are showing signs of renesting.
Eggs were also removed to the zoo from the second pair.
The weather has generally been really bad everywhere, which does not help.
Hopefully better news next week!
